Panache

About

Panache is a real-time strategy game written by Meffysto, an independent developer. It was born from a simple wish: to bring the joy of the great strategy games to the phone, without faking a mouse or playing for forty minutes.

Free, really

No ads, no in-app purchases, no subscription, no “premium currency”. The whole game is free to play, and will stay so.

What the game measures

Anonymous counters: how many visits and matches, and of what kind. No identifier, no cookie, no third-party analytics. Accounts only serve the cloud save and the ladder; you delete yours from Settings. The details are in the privacy policy.

The pictures

The game’s illustrations were made with the help of image generation tools, then retouched and assembled for the game. The units, the map and the whole interface are drawn in code.

Based on Battle Drones, by Simon Willison

Panache started as a fork of Battle Drones, the real-time strategy game created by Simon Willison and released under the Apache 2.0 licence. The whole foundation is his: the deterministic simulation, the armies, the AI, the ops, Last Stand, the Daily Op, replays and a first duel between two phones, over sound. Panache translated it and moved it to 1900 (names, 3D models, sound, music, title screen, mobile interface), then added its two nations, the 1900 Campaign, online duels and the ladder, Éclair, accounts and the iPhone app. Thanks to him for opening his code.

The code
